June 2026 Tax Deadlines: Q2 Estimated Payments and Proactive Planning

As we approach the midpoint of 2026, June presents a critical window for business owners and high-net-worth individuals to assess their tax positioning. At Lizza & Carullo CPAs & Advisors, we believe that true financial control comes from proactive planning, not last-minute reacting. This month’s tax calendar includes several key deadlines—from Q2 estimated tax payments to specialized reporting requirements—that require your attention. Let's break down the June 2026 tax deadlines and how they impact your broader financial strategy.

June 15: Q2 Estimated Tax Payments and Safe Harbor Rules

For self-employed individuals, business owners, and those with income outside of standard W-2 withholding, June 15 is the deadline for your second quarter estimated tax payment. The U.S. tax system operates on a "pay-as-you-earn" basis. Failing to make adequate prepayments can trigger underpayment penalties, which are calculated quarterly based on the federal short-term rate plus three percentage points.

Colleagues working on tax strategy and cash flow forecasting

To avoid these penalties, proactive cash flow forecasting is essential. The IRS offers two "safe harbor" exceptions to protect taxpayers from underpayment penalties:

  • Current Year Safe Harbor: Your prepayments must equal or exceed 90% of your total tax liability for 2026.
  • Prior Year Safe Harbor: Your prepayments must equal 100% of your 2025 tax liability. However, if your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) exceeded $150,000 last year (or $75,000 if married filing separately), this threshold increases to 110% of the prior year's tax.

Why Proactive Estimation Matters

If you've experienced a sudden spike in revenue, sold property, or recognized significant capital gains, relying on last year's numbers might leave you with a massive, unexpected tax bill next April. Part of our advisory process involves tracking your KPIs and running mid-year tax projections so you always know exactly what to set aside. Note: State safe harbor rules, including those here in New Jersey, can differ from federal guidelines. Reach out to our team to confirm your state-specific requirements.

June 10: Reporting May Tips

If your business employs staff who receive tips, or if you are an employee working for tips, June 10 is the deadline to report May tip income to employers. This applies to anyone who received more than $20 in tips during the month. Employers must use these reports to calculate and withhold FICA and income taxes from regular wages. Maintaining clean financial systems and accurate payroll records ensures compliance and eliminates surprises during month-end close.

June 1: IRA Form 5498

By June 1, IRA trustees must issue Form 5498 to account holders. This form reports the fair market value of your IRA as of December 31, 2025, which is necessary for calculating Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) if you are age 73 or older in 2026.

June 15: Expats and Military Personnel

U.S. citizens and resident aliens living and working outside the United States and Puerto Rico have an automatic extension to file their 2025 income tax returns and pay any tax due by June 15. If more time is needed, you can file Form 4868 to request an extension to October 15—though this only extends the time to file, not the time to pay.

Additionally, military personnel serving in combat zones or qualified hazardous duty areas receive specialized, rolling extensions. The IRS extends deadlines for 180 days after leaving the combat zone or ending a related hospitalization, plus any days remaining from the original filing period. Special extensions also apply to those impacted by the 2024 and 2025 terrorist attacks in Israel, pushing certain deadlines to September 30, 2026.

Navigating Weekends, Holidays, and Disaster Area Extensions

Tax deadlines that fall on a weekend or legal holiday automatically move to the next business day. Furthermore, the IRS routinely grants administrative relief to taxpayers located in federally declared disaster areas.
